Our new facilities allow us to isolate production lines, close them and clean them differently. We designed and installed a state-of-the-art system that allows us to manage the packaging lines in a unique way. At Fermentis, we have been improving our packaging and processes to bring it down to between 100 and 1,000 foreign yeast cells per 10 billion. This reduction is\u00a0huge,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0gigantic. As a result, we have achieved a contamination rate that is much lower than the industry standard. This means\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0making brewing yeast\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0more reliable, with which brewers can better manage any risks associated with contamination.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We\u2019re\u00a0very proud\u00a0of this achievement. It was a big investment, and\u00a0it\u2019s paid\u00a0off. Our new facilities\u00a0at\u00a0Algist\u00a0Bruggeman and\u00a0our\u00a0new packaging\u00a0is\u00a0designed in such a way as to protect the quality of our yeast from start to finish \u2013 from production to packaging to pitching.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tell us more about the changes in Fermentis packaging. <\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The second\u00a0big\u00a0upgrade\u00a0of\u00a0our\u00a0new packaging line at\u00a0Algist\u00a0Bruggeman\u00a0is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fermentis.com\/en\/news\/quality-and-innovation\/new-pitching-technology-and-markings\/\">a\u00a0state-of-the-art\u00a0labeling and\u00a0marking\u00a0system<\/a>.\u00a0To my knowledge, there\u00a0are\u00a0no other\u00a0yeast producers\u00a0today\u00a0that can do this kind of labeling.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0brewer\u2019s yeast\u00a0we\u00a0produce\u00a0at\u00a0Algist\u00a0Bruggeman\u00a0is\u00a0exported\u00a0all over the world.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The challenge this presents is that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">not all countries have the same regulatory constraints on imports in terms of labeling and marking. You\u2019re also dealing with different languages, typefaces and characters, and you\u2019re required to produce labels with certain information which differs from country to country.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To solve this problem, we\u2019ve built a new line that can produce what we call \u2018make to order\u2019 labels. In the past, we\u2019ve always done \u2018make to stock\u2019, and we\u2019ll continue to do so, but \u2018make to order\u2019 gives us much more flexibility to better service our customers and distributors around the globe. It helps to ensure products can be delivered on time and in the best condition. Everything is digitalized and automated, so each label will be customized and fit for purpose. Our temporary storage warehouse is fully automated and also quite unique. In the entire yeast industry, I think it\u2019s the only one of its kind in the world.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We\u2019ve also updated our primary label and added a QR code to each individual packet of yeast. Our front label is now a booklet, so users can peel back the labels to find their preferred language. The unique QR codes means each pack can be identified and traced. Can you explain <\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2018Easy To Open\u2019\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in more detail?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0third and final\u00a0dimension\u00a0of this\u00a0project is\u00a0the\u00a0updated\u00a0design of our\u00a0beer yeast\u00a0bricks.\u00a0We have implemented an innovative\u00a0new way for brewers to pitch our yeast which\u00a0further reduces any chance of contamination.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Five hundred gram and 2.5-kilogram packets of brewing yeast produced at Algist Bruggeman will now have a special Easy-To-Open label. We have designed and will distribute a unique piercing tool which allows brewers to open the bag and pitch the yeast in a very clean and controlled way. The Easy-To-Open label covers an adhesive sticker.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When you remove this label and pierce the bag, the tool adheres to the sticker and works as a funnel, allowing the brewer to inverse the bag and pitch the yeast directly into the fermentation vessel. This method minimizes any losses and contamination, which is the key advantage of the new design.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Has the Fermentis Superior Yeast project lived up to your expectations?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I\u2019m\u00a0very happy\u00a0to say that yes,\u00a0it has\u00a0\u2013 and\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0a\u00a0big\u00a0achievement.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The project was created to improve the quality of our yeast. It was really a matter of improving quality through upgraded packaging.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0And now,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0we have an intrinsic product quality that goes up a huge notch.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Thanks to\u00a0these developments,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0not only\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ensuring that the yeast produced and packaged at Algist Bruggeman is as pure as possible, but we\u2019re also providing an innovative way for brewers to pitch their yeast to reduce any cross contamination when brewing. In this role, he guided Fermentis\u2019s global business development by aligning R&amp;D, marketing, sales, supply chain, and other business development competencies to continuously better address market needs for yeast, yeast derivatives, and bacteria across all fermented beverages, primarily beer and wine.<\/p>\n<p><i>St\u00e9phane\u2019s background is in Chemical Engineering, Food Science, Brewing and Business Administration.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>St\u00e9phane remains an active member of a number of global brewers\u2019 associations and is an honorary member of The Belgian Knighthood of the Brewers Mash Staff.
